Who's Actually Making the Rules?

Exit sign requirements come from a few different places, and they all layer on top of each other depending on your building type and location.

Where Do Exit Signs Actually Have to Go?

·         Above every exit door: Any door that leads to an exit must be marked. That includes stairwell doors, corridor exits, and exterior exit doors.

·         At every change of direction: If someone walking through your building can't see the next exit door from where they're standing, there needs to be a sign pointing the way — at every turn, every junction, every point where the path isn't obvious.

·         At corridor intersections: Hallways that cross or branch require directional exit signs so people aren't guessing which way to go at 2am during a fire alarm.
