Why Your Garage Is Costing You More Than You Think

The garage is the average person’s junk drawer. Also, their gym, workshop, storage unit, man cave, and, increasingly, home office annex. We do a lot in there. And yet we consistently light it like a utility closet we don't plan on visiting.

One dim bulb dangling from the ceiling, maybe two if someone got ambitious in 2008. Shadows everywhere. A vague sense that you can see well enough, even though you've definitely reached into a bin and grabbed the wrong thing more than once.

Here's what that setup is actually costing you—and why the garage is one of the highest-ROI lighting upgrades you can make.

The Energy Problem

Most garages are still running older fluorescent fixtures or bare incandescent bulbs—the stuff that was installed when the house was built and never touched again. These are among the least efficient light sources still in common use. A typical two-car garage with two old T12 fluorescent shop lights is burning through roughly 160 watts just for baseline lighting—and that's if the fixtures are working properly, which they often aren't.

Swap those for modern LED equivalents and you're looking at 40–50 watts for the same or better light output. Over the course of a year, if you're in and out of the garage daily, that difference adds up—especially now that electricity rates are climbing in most parts of the country. Some regions are seeing annual rate increases of 25% or more in 2026. The lights you're not thinking about are getting more expensive to run every month.

The Visibility Problem (Which Is Also a Safety Problem)

Bad garage lighting isn't just annoying—it's genuinely risky. Think about what actually happens in a garage:

        You're operating power tools in low light

        You're working under a car, in corners, in cabinets

        You're moving heavy things around in a space full of hard edges

        Your kids are riding bikes and scooters in there

The standard for comfortable task lighting is around 50 foot-candles. Most under-lit garages are running at 10–20. That's the difference between seeing what you're doing and roughly estimating what you're doing, which—depending on what tool is in your hand—is a real distinction.

Good garage lighting means even coverage across the whole space, not just a bright spot under the fixture with shadows everywhere else. That's an argument for multiple fixtures spread across the ceiling rather than one powerful unit in the middle—and it's an argument for high-CRI LEDs that render colors accurately, so you can actually tell the difference between a 10mm and 12mm socket.

What Good Garage Lighting Actually Looks Like

For a standard two-car garage, the goal is consistent, shadow-free light at around 50 foot-candles across the working area. A few approaches depending on ceiling height:

Low ceiling (8–10 feet): LED shop lights or wraparound fixtures work well here. A 4-foot LED wraparound at 4,000–5,000 lumens covers roughly a 10x10 area effectively. Two to four of them, spaced evenly, handles most two-car garages.

Higher ceiling (10–14 feet): LED high bays start making sense. They throw more light over a wider area from greater height, and they're overkill for a typical garage but genuinely excellent if you're running a serious workshop. They're also what most commercial garages and repair shops use, which tells you something.

Either way, color temperature matters. For a garage, 4000K (neutral white) or 5000K (daylight) is almost always the right call—you want to see things clearly, not relax. Save the 2700K warm light for your living room.

The Upgrade Math

A two-fixture LED shop light setup for a standard garage runs roughly $60–120 in fixtures. Installation is straightforward—most are direct replacements for existing fluorescent housings, plug-in or hardwired. If you're comfortable with basic electrical work, it's a weekend afternoon. If not, it's a short electrician visit.

Energy savings alone will pay back the investment within a year or two at current electricity rates, depending on how much time you spend in the garage. That's before you account for the value of actually being able to see while you work.

One More Thing

The garage is often the last room people think about when they're upgrading their home's lighting. Bedroom, kitchen, living room—all get the attention. The garage gets whatever was there when you moved in.

But the garage is also where a lot of people actually spend time—working on projects, exercising, tinkering. It deserves lighting that matches how you actually use it. And at this point, the upgrade is cheap enough and easy enough that there's really no good reason to keep squinting.

Fix the garage lights. It'll take an afternoon and you'll wonder why you waited this long.
